In many Taiwanese households, COVID-19 has made cleanliness a priority like never before. A growing number of households are hiring professional cleaners to disinfect any surface where the novel coronavirus might lurk—everything down to on-off switches and remote controllers.
How do customers know they have gotten their money’s worth? A device called a luminometer can help. This device makes concentrations of bacteria visible. It doesn’t show viruses, but if the device shows any value lower than 500, customers can at least rest assured that their homes meet the cleanliness standards required of hospitals.
Tsai Yun-chiu, the manager of one cleaning service, says that her company’s business has risen by 10% since the same period last year. There has also been growing demand for office cleaning. At least one sector of the economy is booming.
