Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that Taiwan’s bid to participate in next month’s World Health Assembly meeting continues to face challenges. Wu was speaking at the legislature Thursday.

The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of the WHO. Taiwan has been barred from taking part in its annual meetings for several years due to Chinese pressure.

Wu said that despite the obstacles Taiwan faces, the foreign ministry and the health ministry have been working together to gather the support of diplomatic allies and other friendly countries.

Wu said the government’s efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 have won global recognition. He also said that Taiwan is planning to hold two online conferences on COVID-19 with representatives of the United States and Japan.

Wu also said that there is no political motive behind Taiwan’s recent donations of surgical masks to other countries. He said that the donations have been made purely to help contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
