Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that talks are underway to pick Taiwan’s next ambassador to Haiti. Wu was speaking to members of the Legislature’s foreign affairs committee Thursday.
Haiti is one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies in the Caribbean.
Taiwan’s previous ambassador to Haiti returned in March. Taiwanese media have speculated this was because he was involved in a dispute with Haiti’s president, and was ordered to leave the country within 72 hours. The foreign ministry has dismissed this, saying the former ambassador returned to Taiwan because he had other official business to attend to.
The foreign ministry says senior Taiwanese diplomats are now running affairs at the embassy.
However, lawmakers asked the foreign minister about the vacant position of ambassador. He said that the position will be filled soon, once discussions on who to pick are finished.
