The foreign ministry has announced that Taiwan is planning to donate over seven million more masks to countries hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The masks are being sent to help frontline medical workers charged with caring for COVID-19 patients.
On Tuesday, the foreign ministry outlined how the masks will be distributed.
The largest donation, amounting to more than 2.2 million masks, will go the US federal government and to hard-hit US states. A further 1.3 million masks will go the EU and its member states. The rest will be divided between Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, the target countries of the government’s New Southbound Policy, and medical staff caring for Syrian refugees.
The foreign ministry also says that Taiwan is working with the US and EU to fight COVID-19. Taiwan is working with US partners on developing medicines to treat COVID-19 and a vaccine. In addition, Taiwanese representatives are taking part in video-conferences with US experts. Taiwan and the EU are also working together to develop a vaccine.
