The legislature has passed a revision to the Senior Citizens Welfare Act.
Under the revision passed Tuesday, care homes will be fined up to NT$1 million (US$33,000) and shut down for up to a year if senior citizens are found dead due to physical or mental abuse there.
The revision also enables local governments to work with NGOs to supervise the service quality of those institutions. The revisions are aimed at strengthening care for senior citizens at care homes, especially the elderly without children.
