Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says China could scapegoat Taiwan as it faces rising international pressure over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wu was speaking on Tuesday during a TV interview with US network Fox News.
Wu said it is important to uncover the source of COVID-19 because this knowledge will make controlling the disease easier. He said that the US, European countries, and Australia are investigating the source in Wuhan, China, the disease’s presumable origin. He said the results of these investigations will help Taiwan keep COVID-19 under control.
Wu also thanked the US for supporting Taiwan’s participation in WHO meetings. He said that Taiwan’s long exclusion from the WHO is unreasonable, and that China’s claim that it provides medical aid to Taiwan is a lie.
Wu said that Taiwan is not part of China, and that, like any other country, Taiwan is entitled to participate in the World Health Assembly. The World Health Assembly is the WHO’s decision-making body.
He also said that Taiwan is happy to share its successful experience fighting COVID-19 with the world.
