The foreign ministry has thanked US and Czech lawmakers for backing Taiwan’s bid to take part in this year’s World Health Assembly. Taiwan has been barred from attending the annual meeting of the WHO’s governing body for several years due to Chinese pressure.
On Wednesday, 205 members of the US House of Representatives signed a letter urging WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to invite Taiwan to this year’s assembly. That same day, two senate committees in the Czech Parliament also voted in favor of supporting Taiwan’s inclusion.
The foreign ministry says that the US Congress members’ letter is just the most recent of many steps the US has taken to support Taiwan’s bid. Meanwhile, the foreign ministry says that the vote in the Czech Parliament is the first to support Taiwan’s inclusion.
