Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) Chairperson Wellington Koo confirmed on Monday that he will head the National Security Council. He made the remarks on the sidelines of a legislative session on Monday.
There have been media reports about Koo’s appointment but no official announcement.
The reported change in leadership follows the mass-resignation of the Cabinet last week. That’s in preparation for a new Cabinet to be sworn in following the presidential inauguration on Wednesday.
Koo said there are two upcoming tasks for the council. The first is to form a new national security team, while the second is to coordinate work on a broad range of national security issues. He said those include everything from foreign diplomacy, defense, and data security, to protection of technology, trade and the economy.
Koo said the role of the National Security Council Secretary-General is to advise the president on national security issues.
Koo took on the post of FSC chairperson in 2017. FSC Vice Chairman Huang Tien-mu will become chair of the FSC.
David Lee is the outgoing secretary-general of the National Security Council. Lee was also minister of foreign affairs from 2016 to 2018.
