The education ministry is looking to open up a special application process for Hong Kong students who want to study in Taiwan. That’s according to Deputy Education Minister Liu Meng-chi.
During a briefing for the Legislature’s finance committee Wednesday, Liu was asked about a projected spike in demand among Hong Kongers for spots at Taiwanese universities.
Lawmaker Lin Chu-yin said that one source suggests that the number of Hong Kong students looking to study in Taiwan could jump by 65% if Beijing’s planned “Hong Kong national security act” goes through. Taiwan’s government has characterized the proposed act as a threat to Hong Kong’s freedom and democracy.
The spike in interest will likely coincide with a period when applications aren’t being accepted under the two main existing channels for getting into Taiwanese schools.
Liu said that if Beijing’s law goes through and a spike in demand does come, the education ministry will consider setting up a special admissions process as an extraordinary measure.
