Unemployment rate unlikely to rise: Statistics office head
The head of the government statistics office, Chu Tzer-ming, appears in this CNA file photo.

The head of the government statistics office, Chu Tzer-ming, says that Taiwan’s unemployment rate is unlikely to rise in the coming months. Chu was speaking at a meeting of the Legislature’s finance committee on Wednesday.

In April, Taiwan’s unemployment rate broke 4%, the highest unemployment rate Taiwan has recorded since the 2008 financial crisis. Lawmakers asked Chu if the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan will help reign in unemployment.

Chu said that the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on Taiwan’s domestic economy is being felt now, during the second quarter. However, he said that given positive developments, unemployment in Taiwan will not worsen.
