The Mainland Affairs Council says that the government will offer humanitarian assistance to people from Hong Kong. That was the word from Council Minister Chen Ming-tong on Thursday.
Chen was speaking shortly before China’s National People’s Congress passed a national security law for the former British colony. 2878 delegates from the rubber stamp parliament voted in favor, with one opposed and six abstaining.
Critics say the law threatens democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly in Hong Kong.
Now that the law has been passed, Taiwan is likely to see an influx of Hong Kongers looking to begin a new life. To prepare for this, the government is mapping out an assistance plan for new arrivals focused on getting them residency and employment. The plan is expected to be finished within a week.
