China passed the law Thursday by an overwhelming majority of 2878 votes to 1.
In a written statement issued Thursday, the Mainland Affairs Council accused China of jeopardizing democracy, freedom, and rule of law in Hong Kong. It said that Beijing’s heavy-handed approach is not conducive to cross-strait development and will shake global confidence in China.
The Mainland Affairs Council said that Taiwan will not sit idly by in the face of the situation in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, the Legislature said it will issue a joint statement on Friday condemning China’s moves. The statement is expected to receive support across party lines.
