President Tsai Ing-wen has visited a recently-opened Taipei bookstore owned by Hong Kong asylum-seeker Lam Wing Kee.
Tsai’s visit came Friday, the day after China passed a controversial security law that tightens its grip on Hong Kong.
Tsai vowed to assist the Hong Kong people and pledged Taiwan’s support for them as well. Tsai said her visit to the bookstore has helped her understand the needs of Hong Kongers during this difficult time. She said she wants to do what she can to help Hong Kongers residing in Taiwan and those who want to come.
Lam’s Causeway Bay Books opened in Taipei last month, but it is not the first store of that name that he has owned. He was arrested by Chinese authorities for selling books critical of the Chinese Communist Party in his store’s original Hong Kong location. Lam has been in Taiwan since escaping from Hong Kong in April last year.
