Premier Su Tseng-chang says that there’s no need to amend Taiwan’s asylum policy towards Hong Kongers.
Su was speaking Friday amid concerns about a new Chinese security law that critics say could stifle freedom and democracy in Hong Kong.
The opposition KMT has requested changes to sections of the law that address asylum for Hong Kongers seeking to come to Taiwan. However, Su says that existing asylum mechanisms for Hong Kongers are sufficient.
Under current law, Taiwan’s top body in charge of China policy may grant Hong Kongers asylum on a case-by-case basis if Hong Kong’s status changes. Su says this is enough to allow Taiwan to help Hong Kongers in need of protection.
