The Legislature has issued a cross-party statement condemning Beijing’s passage of a controversial national security law governing Hong Kong. The statement says that the law will seriously jeopardize Hong Kong people’s right to exercise autonomy.
The statement recommends that the government provide necessary assistance to Hong Kong citizens whose freedom and safety are in danger for political reasons. It also suggests that the government help workers and students from Hong Kong now based in Taiwan who support Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.
In addition, the Legislature has asked the Mainland Affairs Council, Taiwan’s top China policymaking body, to keep an eye on Hong Kong and submit quarterly reports on its political, social, and economic status.
