A new survey has found that the number of Taiwanese people interested in domestic tourism has jumped since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Credit card company Mastercard asked 500 Taiwanese people online about their willingness to travel and spend within Taiwan. The company released the results of the survey on Thursday.
78% of respondents said that they would be willing to take a two- to three-day domestic trip once the COVID-19 pandemic eases. That’s compared with the 48% who said they would have considered such a trip before the pandemic began.
In addition 45% said they would be traveling domestically within three months after restrictions are lifted. Meanwhile over half of respondents said they would be willing to spend between NT$5000-NT$8000 (US$170-US$270) on a domestic trip.
Most of the respondents—close to 60%—said they hope to visit the Hualien and Taitung areas of eastern Taiwan or some of Taiwan’s outlying islands. A further 11% hope to visit the southern city of Tainan and 10% hope to visit Taiwan’s central region.
