The foreign ministry says it has confidence in the democratic system of the United States.
On Thursday, foreign ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou said the government is paying attention to protests that have swept the US since the killing of an unarmed African-American by a Minnesota police officer. Ou said she hopes that the protests triggered by this police brutality will end soon. She said she trusts that there will be proper charges against the police involved in the case.
Ou said Taiwan has confidence in the US government and its people. She said that’s because the United States is a democratic country governed by the rule of law with transparency and an independent judicial body. Ou said she believes that a mature democratic system like that of the US will be able to handle problems that arise effectively.
Ou also said Taiwan is opposed to discrimination in any form and hopes the global community will take discrimination, unfairness, violence, and human rights violations seriously.
