The American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei has lauded Taiwan’s success in containing COVID-19 in its 2020 White Paper. The chamber of commerce released the paper on Wednesday. The paper gives an assessment of Taiwan’s business climate, divided by sector.
The report says that Taiwan should use its success in fighting COVID-19 to encourage investment from other countries. It also says that Taiwan could play an important role in the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing US support for Taiwan’s international participation. The paper also calls for stronger trade ties between Taiwan and the US and talks about the possibility of a bilateral trade agreement.
AmCham Taipei is calling Taiwan to be more flexible in its attitude towards the import of US beef and pork. Taiwan banned the import of US beef in 2003 due to mad cow disease, conditionally lifting the ban in 2006. Meanwhile, it has banned imports of US pork for more than ten years because of the use of leanness enhancing drug ractopamine.
The Cabinet on Wednesday thanked AmCham Taipei for affirming Taiwan’s efforts. It said that it will continue to improve Taiwan’s investment environment in order to enhance Taiwan’s global competitiveness.
