President Tsai Ing-wen is set to attend the Copenhagen Democracy Summit next Friday via video link.
The foreign ministry said Thursday that the president will give a speech about Taiwan’s democracy and its experience containing the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Copenhagen Democracy Summit aims to promote democratic movements around the world. The event is organized by the Alliance of Democracies, an NGO founded in 2017.
Also on Thursday, foreign ministry spokeswoman Joanne Ou said that the speaker of the Czech Senate, Miloš Vystrčil, plans to visit Taiwan in September.
The planned visit has angered China. But Ou said that the Czech people have voiced support and that the planned trip has won approval from the Czech senate in a vote of 50 to 1.
In an interview with Reuters earlier this week, Vystrčil said that his visit is “motivated by business development and the country’s tradition of human rights policies.”
