Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council has reiterated its support for the people of Hong Kong. The council is the government’s top China policymaking body.
On Friday, council Deputy Minister Chiu Chui-cheng took part in a virtual workshop on Hong Kong since its handover to China in 1997. The conference was organized by National Chengchi University.
Chiu said that China’s aggressive suppression of Hong Kong’s people is the source of the unrest in the territory. He said that by contrast, Taiwan is a fortress of democracy in Asia. Chiu said that Taiwan will continue to support the people of Hong Kong, and their endeavors for freedom and democracy.
Chiu said that China promised to uphold its “one country, two systems” formula in Hong Kong for 50 years after the 1997 handover. But he said that Beijing has since turned its back on that promise by passing a strict security law to govern Hong Kong.
