Taiwan working to upgrade, internationalize workforce: Tsai
President Tsai Ing-wen speaks at an event held Friday to mark the release of a white paper.

President Tsai Ing-wen says that Taiwan is working to enhance its workers’ English language proficiency and digital skills. She also says that Taiwan hopes to attract more professionals from abroad.

Tsai was speaking Friday during an event marking the release of the first Annual Talent Circulation Alliance White Paper. This is a part of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei’s 2020 white paper.

Tsai said that the COVID-19 pandemic has shown the need for industries to innovate. She said that training innovative people is the key to making this innovation happen. She also said that COVID-19 has led to a shift in global supply chains. She said Taiwan needs to use this as an opportunity to secure an important position for itself in future supply chains.

Tsai said that the government has been preparing Taiwan’s work force for a globalized age by strengthening English education and stressing English proficiency in banks and government agencies. At the same time, she said that the government has been providing classes teaching digital skills and encouraging young people to study abroad and bring these skills back with them.

Tsai also said Taiwan wants to attract a more diverse array of talent from around the world. She said the government wants to raise Taiwan’s international competitiveness and attract students from the world’s best universities to study and work in Taiwan. She said the government will loosen restrictions on hiring foreign nationals and give companies incentives to bring in skilled workers from abroad.
