President Tsai Ing-wen called on the military to be on guard to protect the nation. That’s amidst increased military moves by China. Tsai was speaking on Tuesday at a ceremony honoring 20 officers who will be promoted next month.
The president praised the military’s contribution to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic as they helped with the production of masks and with disinfectant work. Tsai said, “I need to remind everyone that the pandemic is not over. The People’s Liberation Army is also constantly harassing our sea and air space. We need to always be on the alert and keep a close watch to protect national security.”
She also highlighted the inaugural flight of Taiwan’s advanced jet trainer (AJT) on Monday and said that she would continue to work towards the defense ministry’s goals. These include reforming the military, developing asymmetrical warfare capabilities, as well as upgrading military management and reserve systems.
Tsai also congratulated the five officers who will be promoted to lieutenant general and the 15 who will become major generals on July 1.
