A new poll by Taiwan Indicators Survey Research indicates that the DPP’s Chen Chi-mai is leading the race to become Mayor of Kaohsiung.
The city is holding a by-election on August 15 to replace ousted mayor Han Kuo-yu, who was recalled in June.
The poll puts support for Chen at 54.6%. However, Chen is urging his supporters not to be complacent. He says it is essential that his backers turn out to vote on Election Day.
According to the poll, Chen’s KMT rival, Li Mei-jhen, has just 14.4% support. However, speaking on the campaign trail Thursday, Li said she will continue forging ahead.
Meanwhile, Taiwan People’s Party candidate Wu Yi-jheng says that the city needs to find a balance between environmental protection and economic prosperity. He is proposing a renovation of the city’s incinerators and work to increase the efficiency of electricity production. He says that developing more green energy capacity will allow the city to make money while also attracting more businesses.
