Taiwan recorded a new imported case of COVID-19 on Friday. The new case brings the total number of COVID-19 cases Taiwan has recorded so far up to 449.

The patient is a Taiwanese man who returned from South Africa on Wednesday. He had been tested for COVID-19 on the morning of June 27 in preparation for his trip. The test came back negative. However, he had fallen ill by the afternoon of the same day. Doctors said the man had a cold. He departed South Africa on Tuesday after his symptoms had improved, transiting through Dubai on the way.

The man’s symptoms had disappeared by the time he arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday. However, he told airport staff of his recent illness and was tested for COVID-19 again. The result came back positive on Friday.

Health authorities have identified 27 people the man came into contact with on his return trip to Taiwan. Of these, 13 have been told to go into home quarantine, while the remainder is being told to monitor their health over the next 14 days.
