Former US national security advisor John Bolton says that the US should give Taiwan full diplomatic recognition in order to put pressure on China. Bolton was speaking Thursday during an online discussion with the US Foreign Press Association on topics including US-China-Taiwan relations.
Bolton said that the US has made compromises to appease Beijing a number of times over the years. He gave as an example the need for US officials to meet with Taiwanese representatives at coffee shops instead of in official office buildings.
Bolton says that US officials should meet with Taiwanese counterparts as a way of expressing the United States’ dissatisfaction with Beijing’s treatment of Hong Kong and China’s Uyghur population.
