Taiwan maintains sovereignty over islands in the South China Sea: Official

The foreign ministry says Taiwan’s sovereignty over the islands in the South China Sea is indisputable. That’s the word from Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou on Tuesday. Ou was referring to Taiping Island in the Spratly Islands.

In a statement released on Monday, the United States rejected China’s maritime claims in the South China Sea. While China claims almost all of the area, five other governments also claim all or part of the area.

Ou said the government’s stance on its sovereignty remains unchanged. She said all parties involved should set aside their differences and jointly develop the region.

Ou also said Taiwan insists on using peaceful means to solve territorial disputes. She said all claimants must act in line with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea enacted in 1982.
