President Tsai Ing-wen says Tuesday’s air raid drill aims to remind the public to stay alert at all times.
Tsai made the statement in a post on her Facebook page and through a text message on Tuesday morning, hours before the drill started at 1:30 pm.
The 30-minute air raid drill also aims to test Taiwan’s “Airspace Threat Alert System” in the event of a missile attack to give the public more time to escape to safety.
This has been the third consecutive year since the system was first tested in 2018.
President Tsai said public awareness of the threat of the enemy and participation in the drill will help Taiwanese protect national security together.
Unlike previous exercises, traffic controls and evacuations are not implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
