VIDEO: Senior citizens encouraged to take part in walking event
A 97-year-old grandfather has been taking part in an annual walking event for six years.

A senior citizens’ welfare foundation is encouraging people, and senior citizens in particular, to take part in its annual walking event. The event is scheduled to take place later in the year.

The event aims to promote physical and mental health among older people and has attracted more than 19,000 participants over the past six years.

You’re never too old to get fit! That’s the message one welfare group for senior citizens hopes to spread with an annual 5k walk.

Everyone is welcome to join in, but the group is especially proud of the fact that it has convinced an ever-greater number of senior citizens to take part over the years. One worker at the foundation says that the proportion of participants aged 90 and over has risen from just 1% to 4%.

One of those in this age bracket who’s taking part is a 97-year-old grandfather. He has been taking part in the event for six years now, and he has no intention of stopping. He says he walks one to two kilometers every day. It takes him between 30 minutes to an hour to cover this distance.

This year’s walk is scheduled to be held on November 28. The event has several local editions- one each in Taipei, Pintung, and Kaohsiung ensuring that people in different parts of Taiwan can take part.
