Legislature confirms Chen Chu as head of Control Yuan

The legislature on Friday approved the appointment of Chen Chu as head of the Control Yuan. That's after days of scuffles between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and opposition Kuomintang (KMT) lawmakers over her nomination.

She was confirmed as president in a 65-3 vote, with two votes invalid, in the 113-seat legislature.

Chen is the former secretary-general of the Presidential Office and the former mayor of Kaohsiung.

The Control Yuan is the investigative agency that monitors other branches of the government.

The Kuomintang had opposed her nomination because members of her Kaohsiung staff had been impeached by the Control Yuan.

She is the first of President Tsai Ing-wen’s 27 nominees for the Control Yuan to become confirmed.  Chen’s term will be for 6 years.
