Mountain climbers urged to watch out for wasps
22 mountain climbers were rushed to the hospital after suffering from wasp stings on Monday.

The central county of Nantou is calling on the public to watch out for wasps in mountainous areas. That’s after 22 mountain climbers were rushed to the hospital after suffering from wasp stings.

A sudden wasp attack caught mountain climbers in Nantou county off guard as 22 of them got stung! But thanks to the firefighters who arrived at the scene quickly with protective clothing, they were all safe.

Emergency room doctor Lin Chao-chieh says some got stung on the scalp, and others on their hands and feet. Dr. Lin says the major symptoms they suffered were sharp pain, swelling and an itch caused by allergy to wasp venom. One person had heart palpitations.

No one knows exactly how the swarm of wasps suddenly launched an attack on the hikers. It could be that someone stepped on a honeycomb accidentally.

To prevent similar accidents, firefighters have removed honeycombs and restricted movement into the mountainous area.
