Taipower will not adjust peak power consumption forecast
Power consumption spikes in summer months due to high temperatures

Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) says that it will not adjust its daily peak power consumption forecast for the summer. That’s despite the fact that several days last week saw total power consumption exceeding expectations. Right now, Taipower has set daily peak power consumption at 37.91 gigawatts.

Higher temperatures last week saw power consumption hit a record-high of 38.02 gigawatts. However, Taipower says that afternoon thundershowers have brought down temperatures in the last two days, leading to lower power consumption.

Taipower says that it expects power consumption to surpass 38 gigawatts again, on July 30, but it’s not planning to adjust the forecast. Instead, Taipower says it’s a short-term spike, not a long-term seasonal trend. Taipower says that with the possibility of more rain storms and typhoons in the future, an adjustment to the current benchmark is not necessary.

Even though Taiwan’s power consumption has increased over the years, the Taipower’s capacity has also grown. The company says that its reserve capacity exceeded 11% every day last week.
