All 189 people recently in contact with a migrant worker diagnosed with COVID-19 have tested negative.
The migrant worker was from Thailand, but had worked in Taiwan since 2018 without leaving the country. He returned to Thailand on July 21, and then became ill. He has since tested positive for COVID-19, leading to concerns that Taiwan may again see local cases of transmission after several months of only imported cases.
The 189 people are all employees at the same Taoyuan-based company that employed the Thai worker. They include 18 people who are in quarantine, including one who is being kept isolated at a hospital.
On Wednesday, Taoyuan Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan said that the city government will continue testing and enforcing quarantines as needed. He also said the city will continue to provide information about preventing COVID-19 to its population of migrant workers from overseas.
Cheng also spoke about Taoyuan’s efforts to combat dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness that has recently sickened nine in the city. The city is already spraying for mosquitos and sending all those being tested for the disease to hospitals for a second round of testing. Cheng said that if the situation worsens, the city will expand its spraying and testing operations.
