VIDEO: Kinmen wetlands become new attraction after turning pink
Pink wetlands are a hit with tourists

It is high season for tourism throughout Taiwan. Summer vacation is here, and this year, people are spending their vacations in Taiwan due to COVID-19. Taiwan’s outlying islands have become hotspots for domestic travel, and a new natural phenomenon on the island of Kinmen wetland is attracting special attention.

Meet Kinmen Island’s hottest new tourist attraction! The Shuangli Wetlands at Guningtou are always lovely, but now they’re moved way up on everyone’s must-see list. That’s because they’ve turned pink!

From the air, it looks like a palette for painting in watercolor. The algae have colored the waters in a variety of shades and colors. It isn’t just tourists who are coming for a look.  One local woman loves the pink water, saying it’s a nice, feminine color.

It seems the pink is an especially big hit. Little girls has even come dressed to match!

Some people are worried that the colors might be caused by pollution. But don’t worry! The unusual color is natural, caused by the multitude of algae growing in the water. Kinmen Water Testing Technician Lee Chin-chao says this phenomenon happens when there’s enough sun and heat and the pond is fertile.

Warm sun is something the summer travel season has plenty to offer, so now is the perfect time to come visit this new addition to the tourist trail on Taiwan’s outlying islands.
