Hospital says rumors of Lee Teng-hui’s death untrue
President Tsai Ing-wen, center, paid a visit to former President Lee Teng-hui, right, in February this year.

The Taipei Veterans General Hospital said on Wednesday that rumors of former President Lee Teng-hui’s death are unfounded.

The hospital was referring to posts circulating on social media the previous night that claimed that Lee had passed away. These rumors led to a crowd of journalists waiting outside the hospital doors late Tuesday night, hoping to get a statement from the hospital management.

The 97-year-old former president had been hospitalized since early February. Lee was diagnosed with pulmonary infiltration, and has been intubated since then.

President Tsai Ing-wen, Vice President William Lai, and Premier Su Tseng-chang paid Lee a visit on Wednesday morning, and the hospital briefed the three on Lee’s current condition.

The hospital also said that while Lee is not in good health and needs constant care, it will be sure to announce any changes in the former president’s condition.
