Taiwan’s presidential office has expressed concern and regret over the arrest of Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai.
Lai is the founder of Next Digital, which runs publications, like Apple Daily, in both Taiwan and Hong Kong. Hong Kong authorities arrested Lai and six others on Monday morning on suspicion of foreign collusion, under a newly minted Hong Kong security law.
Taiwan’s presidential office says Lai’s arrest is a blow to Hong Kong’s freedom of press and a violation of human rights. The presidential office is urging China to engage in dialogue with the people of Hong Kong, saying that Beijing should seek peaceful resolution to conflicts, rather than persecuting individuals who voice opposition.
The Office of the President says it stands with the people of Hong Kong. It says that it will continue to assist Hong Kong through the newly established Taiwan-Hong Kong Office for Exchanges and Services.
