Chen will serve out the remaining two years of the current mayoral term. Chen lost to the KMT’s Han Kuo-yu during the 2018 mayoral election. However, Han was recalled in early June. Since then, an acting mayor has been overseeing Kaohsiung’s day-to-day operations.
