The newly elected mayor of Kaohsiung has vowed to hire more women. The Democratic Progressive Party’s Chen Chi-mai made the vow on Monday after winning by a landslide on Saturday.
Chen won 70% of the vote. His closest competitor, the Kuomintang’s (KMT) Li Mei-jhen garnered just under 26% of the vote. Chen will serve the remainder of a term left by ousted Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu.
The new Kaohsiung mayor said that while he has plans to hire more women to serve on his team, he has not yet reached out to potential candidates. Chen promised that he would hire anyone with talent, with no regard to party affiliation.
Meanwhile, Chen also responded on Monday to calls in the messaging app LINE
for citizens to attack the city government following his win. Chen urged the public to set aside their differences and begin working together.
