President Tsai Ing-wen says Taiwan wants to strengthen ties with countries targeted by the government’s New Southbound policy when the COVID-19 pandemic eases. Tsai was speaking Tuesday.

The New Southbound policy aims to boost Taiwan’s economic and cultural ties with South Asia, Southeast Asia, New Zealand and Australia. It has been a centerpiece of Tsai’s foreign affairs agenda since she took office in 2016.

Tsai said the government will continue promoting the policy as it is a key national strategy, especially in the face of ensuing global economic changes.

Also on Monday, Tsai said the government will turn Taiwan into a center for enterprise capital and high-level asset management for Asian companies. Tsai made the statement while meeting with the head of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei, C.W. Chin.

Tsai said the government will work on six core strategic industries, including IT and digital technology, 5G and data security, biomedicine, medical technology, and green energy.
