Taiwanese charity Kid’s Bookhouse believes that the best way to get kids familiar with Taiwan’s nature is simply sending them out to experience it for themselves. The charity works with disadvantaged children, and it takes the idea of challenging them to achieve seriously.
In addition to challenges for kids like cycling and kayaking around the island, the charity also organizes treks across Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range. This year, seven children who had already cycled and kayaked around the island have taken on the cross-island hike.
Step by step, staff from charity Kid’s Bookstore walked up the mountain with seven of the disadvantaged children they work with in tow. Their goal was to cross the Central Mountain Range to a beautiful lake on the other side, at more than 2,000 meters above sea level.
It will take them a week to complete the round trip trek over the most rugged terrain in Taiwan. Kids started physical training at the beginning of the year to prepare for the journey. Kid’s Bookhouse owner Chen Yen-han says the kids are well-prepared .
Instead of following the beaten path, using the same hiking trails used by other mountaineers, Chen says the group walks finds its own paths through the mountains.
Chen says he can’t wait to see the kids’ excitement when they complete the journey- proof that as disadvantaged though they might be, they can overcome any obstacle, no matter how high.
