Chen Chi-mai took office as Kaohsiung mayor on Monday morning. The post was passed to him from acting Kaohsiung Mayor Yang Ming-chou who has been mayor since the recall of former Mayor Han Kuo-yu in June.
Mayor Chen outlined his four priorities for the city over the next two years. These are transforming industry, increasing employment, improving transportation infrastructure and reducing air pollution.
In his inaugural speech, Chen stressed the importance of humility and living up to the people’s expectations.
The DPP’s Chen won the by-election on August 15 with 70% of the total votes, defeating KMT candidate Li Mei-jhen who received 26% and TPP candidate Wu Yi-jheng who won 4% of the vote.
Mayor Chen has two more years remaining in his term, which ends in December 2022.
