President Tsai Ing-wen says the government is planning to introduce a minimum wage law to provide a better system for wage hikes. Tsai was speaking Tuesday while meeting with model workers and their families.

The government has decided to raise the minimum monthly wage from NT$23,800 (US$793) to NT$24,000 (US$800), starting 2021. This will be the fifth time the Tsai administration has raised the minimum wage since she took office in 2016.

Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, Tsai said the government is working hard to help people with low incomes and part-time jobs.

Tsai said she hopes that by introducing a minimum wage law, the mechanism for salary increase reviews and indexes can be better systematized.

Tsai also said the Labor Incident Act, which took effect in January, aims to give employees more protection in legal battles. That’s because lawsuits are costly and time-consuming and employees often have trouble providing evidence.
