Somaliland’s representative to Taiwan says that the Somaliland representative office in Taipei is scheduled to begin operations in early September.
Representative Mohamed Omar Hagi Mohamoud arrived in Taiwan on August 9 in preparation for the representative office’s opening.
On Monday, he said that there will be around five staff working the office, including two Taiwanese nationals. Two other members of staff have arrived in Taiwan from Somaliland to help with the office’s opening.
Mohamoud said that Somaliland and Taiwan relations are now “formal,” something he said is obvious from the agreement to exchange representative offices.
The East African state of Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991. Although it does not have official diplomatic ties with any country, it has 20 representative offices in countries around the world. Countries and organizations, including the EU, the UK, and the UN also maintain offices in Somaliland’s capital.
