Taiwan is preparing to welcome a 90-person delegation from the Czech Republic. The delegation is to be led by the President of the Czech Senate, Miloš Vystrčil. Its members will include Mayor of Prague Zdeněk Hřib as well as representatives of 36 Czech companies.
The delegation will arrive Saturday and stay in Taiwan until September 5. The group’s itinerary includes a visit to Taiwan’s Legislature, scheduled for September 1. During the visit, Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil will be awarded a medal and will deliver a speech.
The delegation will also be present for the unveiling of a Czech Republic-themed special exhibit at the Legislature. Czech and Taiwanese representatives will also sign a commemorative “democracy wall”. The wall is meant to symbolize the former Czechoslovakia’s 1989 Velvet Revolution and Taiwan’s 1990 Wild Lily Student Movement, two milestones in two different stories of democratic transformation.
Vystrčil says his visit to Taiwan shows the Czech Republic’s willingness to cooperate with all democratic countries. He says that despite opposition from China and criticism from some Czech officials, his decision to visit Taiwan has been met with overwhelming support.
