KMT wants local governments to oppose new meat policy
The opposition KMT is calling on its caucuses in local governments across Taiwan to work towards countering the central government’s new policies on imported meat.

The opposition KMT is calling on its caucuses in local governments across Taiwan to work towards countering the central government’s new policies on imported meat.

Nineteen of Taiwan’s 22 city and county councils are led by KMT speakers. KMT Chairman Johnny Chiang is planning to use this to the party’s advantage. He is calling on local government chapters to stop imported pork containing ractopamine residue from making its way into the local market.

Chiang says that many local governments are drafting their own measures to handle future meat imports. He has also criticized President Tsai Ing-wen and her administration for relaxing standards on imported meat without having supporting measures in place.

According to the KMT, over ten cities and counties have agreed to draft local regulations on imported meats that contain ractopamine. Chiang and the party also called on Tsai to make public the ways in which the administration reached its decision to change the policy on ractopamine.
