This year the Paiwan tribe in the southern county of Pingtung will once again host a hog-catching competition, but they are catching black hogs. Taiwu village, which is home to the Paiwan tribe, opted for black hogs rather than white hogs or wild boars.
Catching a running hog is not easy at all. It requires skill, teamwork and speed. Once participants subdue the animal, they have to carry it to the finishing line through a 500-meter mountainous road.
The winning team, cheered by spectators, happily carried the 110-kilo black hog.
There are eight teams in this year’s race, including a team made up of soldiers.
Taiwu Village Chief Chiu Teng-hsing says the village holds the annual boar-catching race for young people because young people are the tribe’s future. The competition aims to test their wisdom, patience and physical strength.
