Czech Senate President Milos Vystricil’s visit to Taiwan received overwhelming support from a resolution passed in the Czech senate. The resolution passed 50 to 1 back in May. Vystricil’s visit became the subject of scrutiny following criticism from Czech President Milos Zeman.
In an interview with Czech TV station Prima on Sunday, Zeman called the delegation’s visit a “boyish provocation.” China had previously slammed the senate speaker and said Vystricil would “pay a heavy price” for visiting Taiwan.
The Czech resolution also determined that China overreached when it warned of repercussions for Czech businesses if Vystrcil went ahead with his visit.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Joanne Ou said that Taiwan will continue to deepen its economic and political collaborations with the Czech Republic in preparation for a post-pandemic era.
Vystrcil’s 89-person delegation departed Taiwan on Friday after a weeklong visit.
