Taiwan’s human trials of COVID-19 vaccines have been suspended after some subjects had adverse reactions. The human trials had begun in mid-August, conducted with Oxford University’s AstraZeneca.

On Wednesday, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung spoke about Taiwan’s plan for vaccines during the weekly Central Epidemic Command Center press briefing. He said that Taiwan is working to gain the right to produce vaccines from partner companies but, in the first stage, it will likely pre-order from overseas instead. That’s because acquiring the right to produce vaccines from these companies would require making an amount far beyond Taiwan’s needs.

Chen said that in addition to planning on pre-ordering vaccines, Taiwan is also continuing work to make its own vaccines.
