The foreign ministry says that the Dalai Lama is welcome to visit Taiwan again. The Dalai Lama has previously visited Taiwan in 1997, 2001, and 2009, and according to the Voice of Tibet, he hopes to visit Taiwan next year as well.
However, the foreign ministry says that Taiwan has yet to receive his application. It also says that the COVID-19 pandemic and disease prevention measures mean that there are difficulties involved with a visit for now. The ministry says that the Tibetan spiritual leader is welcome to visit Taiwan under circumstances that are convenient and feasible.
Meanwhile, an official with the Tibetan government-in-exile has told Taiwan’s Central News Agency that “several conditions must be met” before any visit by the Dalai Lama, and that circumstances are not yet ready.
