The opposition KMT announced on Friday that it will launch a signature-gathering drive over the weekend in all of Taiwan’s counties and special municipalities. The signatures will go towards supporting a proposal to hold a referendum on food safety. The proposed referendum is a protest against the government’s decision to relax restrictions on imports of pork and beef from the US.
The party says it will set up 115 stations around the country where citizens can sign in support of the referendum, mostly in markets, temples, and public transportation hubs.
The referendum must garner 10,000 signatures in order to move on to the second stage in the referendum process. From there, it must pass a 300,000-signature threshold to advance further.
