A certain cook who appeared on BBC Food made headlines recently, when the questionable recipe she was following resulted in some decidedly un-authentic fried rice.
She has talked about the incident in good humor after her cooking video went viral. Perhaps now she can also learn a thing or two from the fine cooks of Taiwan, who are gearing up for the second annual nationwide fried rice challenge.
Last year, the Agriculture and Food Agency hosted Taiwan’s first-ever nationwide fried rice cook-off, and it’s gotten enough attention to merit a second edition this year. After all, over 200 teams participated last year to fight for the title of best fried rice!
The winner’s fried rice will be sold in the frozen food aisles of Taiwan’s big supermarket chains. Last year’s victors have sold over 90,000 servings of their fried rice this way.
The agency is hoping to boost consumer interest in rice through the event, and this year things are to get even more interesting. Participants are being encouraged to think of how to jazz up their fried rice, as “international” and “fashionable” are two of the new themes this year.
Just how international can this get? The winning team will get the opportunity to work with air carriers, and have their fried rice served to the mile high club.
